This README file contains the latest information about IBM XL C for AIX, 
V10.1 that was not available for our online help and documentation.

By using IBM XL C for AIX, V10.1 you agree to the terms of the license as
specified in the following files:

*  LicAgree.pdf
*  LicInfo.pdf

These files are located in the root directory of the installation media.
After installation, they are located in the following directory:

/usr/vac/

 with the following names:

*  LicenseAgreement.pdf
*  license.pdf

You will need a PDF viewer to view these files.

1. Viewing documentation on AIX
===============================

Documentation on installing and using IBM XL C for AIX, V10.1 can be found
in the .pdf files included as part of this package, and in the HTML-based
information center. To view the documentation, you must have X-Windows
working on your system. In addition, you need to have the appropriate
viewers, such as a frames-capable HTML browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, or
a PDF viewer, such as Adobe Reader.

To start the HTML-based information center, first launch the Web
server by logging in with root authority and running the following
command:

/usr/xlhelp/bin/xlhelp

When the Web server has started, you can view the information center
from the server machine or any client. For more information, see the 
"IBM XL C for AIX, V10.1 Installation Guide".


2. Installation information
===========================

Operating system support
------------------------

IBM XL C for AIX, V10.1 is supported on the following AIX operating
systems:

* IBM AIX V5.3 TL 5300-06, or higher
* IBM AIX V6.1 
* IBM i 6.1 (i5/OS V6R1) PASE

Portable Application Solutions Environment (IBM i PASE) support
---------------------------------------------------------------

IBM XL C for AIX, V10.1 can be installed and operated in the IBM i PASE
environment using IBM i 6.1 with the appropriate PTF.

Uninstalling beta or evaluation versions
----------------------------------------

Before installing the fully-licensed version of the product, you must
uninstall any beta or evaluation version of the product that you have
on your system. To do so, at the command prompt, log in as root, and
type the following command:

installp -u vac.\* memdbg.\* xlhelp.\* xlsmp.\* xlmass.\* ibmdebugger.\* 
    xlC.adt.include

If you also have XL Fortran installed in its default location, you must not 
remove any filesets which are shared between the compilers. Uninstalling 
common components such as memdbg.*, xlhelp.*, xlmass.*,  and xlsmp.* will 
also make any fully-licensed version of the product that you have installed
unable to function. Use with discretion.

Uninstalling previous versions
------------------------------

Before installing IBM XL C for AIX, V10.1, it is recommended that you 
uninstall any previous versions of the product that you have on your system
by following the uninstall instructions that came with that version.

installation of IBM XL C, see the "Advanced installation" section in the 
"IBM XL C for AIX, V10.1 Installation Guide".
