About the information center

With the information center, users can view, browse, and search online information. The information center is built upon open source software developed by the Eclipse Project (Arrow indicating extermal Web site www.eclipse.org). It can display content that has been packaged as an Eclipse documentation plug-in.

The information center uses an embedded web application server to handle content requests in the system. This embedded web server uses a random port to avoid port conflicts between applications.

Product or application developers can create their own documentation plug-ins and integrate them in the information center for viewing by their users. To learn about creating and packaging documentation plug-ins, see the Eclipse Project's Web site:Arrow indicating external Web site www.eclipse.org.

Navigating by keyboard

Use the following key combinations to navigate the information center by keyboard:
  • In the Topic pane, to go to the next link, press Tab.

Accessibility features help users with physical disabilities, such as restricted mobility or limited vision, to use software products successfully. The major accessibility features in this product enable users to do the following tasks:

Setting bookmarks and printing in the information center

Bookmarking a topic

You can find a topic more easily in the future by setting a bookmark.

For an information center deployed on a server and viewed over an intranet or the Internet, you can save bookmarks for topics to your browser's bookmarks or favorites menu. For an information center that is installed and viewed locally on your machine, you can save bookmarks for topics to the Bookmarks view.

  • When viewing an information center that is local on your machine, click the Bookmark icon (Bookmark icon) to save a bookmark for the current topic to the Bookmarks view.
  • When viewing a remote information center, right-click anywhere in the topic that you are currently viewing. Follow the menu options to save a bookmark to the topic. The bookmark is saved to your browser's bookmark or favorites menu.
  • Internet Explorer only: When viewing a remote information center in Internet Explorer, you can click the Bookmark icon and save the bookmark to one of your Favorites folders.

Printing topics

To print the topic that you are viewing, click Print (Print icon). To print multiple topics at one time, use the quick print choices on the Quick menu:

  1. To open the Quick menu, hold your cursor over a topic in the Contents view. The icon (Open Quick Menu) for the Quick menu appears. Click the icon.
    • To print only the selected topic, click Print this topic to open the Print Preview window.
    • To print the selected topic and all of its subtopics, click Print this topic and subtopics to open the Print Preview window.
    • To change the page setup before printing, select File->Page Setup in the preview window and modify the settings.
  2. When you are ready to send the job to the printer, click Print (Print icon) in the Print Preview window to start printing.

Exception: If there are no master index terms provided with this documentation, the Index view is unavailable.

To locate topics in the information center using index keywords, you can input the keywords in the input field. The index list will automatically scroll to the best matched keyword and highlight it. Then select the keyword to see the associated topic or click Display. If there is more than one topic associated with a keyword, when you select the keyword to see the associated topic, a window displays the titles of the associated topics.

To toggle between the Navigation view and the Index view, click Contents (Contents tab) or Index (Index tab).

Indexes are not case-sensitive.

The master index is not filtered by any filters that you might have set.

Navigating in the information center

The information center provides a graphical user interface for browsing product documentation.

The Contents view (high-level topic) on the left side of the interface displays the titles of the topics in the documentation. The titles are displayed in a table of contents or navigation-tree structure. Select the topic titles in the navigation tree to display the topic content.

Click Back (back arrow) and Forward (forward arrow) to navigate within the history of viewed topics.

To return to Contents view after running a search, click the Contents tab (Contents tab) at the bottom of the view.

Synchronizing the Contents view

When you follow a link within a topic, the heading of the new topic is not automatically highlighted in the Contents view. To see where the new topic fits in the Contents view and to synchronize the two views, click Refresh (Refresh) or Show in Table of Contents (Show in table of contents). The topic title for the currently displayed topic is highlighted in the Contents view.

Exception: If you have filtered the Contents view and then try to synchronize the Contents view for a topic that does not meet your filter criteria, the synchronization does not occur because the topic has been filtered out of the Contents view by your filter setting. Filtering the Contents view

In some documentation sets, topics might be tagged for particular criteria; for example, when a topic only concerns a specific operating system. In these situations, you can remove from display in the Contents view all of those topics that are tagged for a specific criteria by using the filter settings to customize your Contents view. To set filter conditions:

  1. Click Filter (Filter ). The Set Filter window opens.
  2. Out of the types of available criteria, select the filtering options you want.
  3. Click OK. The Contents view refreshes and displays the topics that meet your chosen filter. The Filter button is highlighted to remind you that filter conditions are set.

Exception: If the documentation provider has turned off the filtering function for this system, the Filter icon is not available.

Any filters that you set only affect the display of topics in the Contents view and actions like the quick print and quick search that you can take in the Contents view. The filters are not applied to any of the other views (Index, Search Results, or Bookmarks views).

Viewing information in different languages

To view the information center user interface in another language, set the language option in your browser so that your desired language is the first one that is specified, clear the browser cache, and refresh your browser view.

On some browser and operating system combinations, you might also need to change the regional settings of your operating system to the locale and language of your choice.

The system displays the translated documentation that has been provided by the product owner. If the product owner has not provided the documentation in your chosen language but has provided the English version, the system will display the English version by default, even if the browser language option is set to another language.
