Permanently Promoting an Inbound Replica Set to a Volume

You can permanently promote an inbound replica set to a volume. The resulting volume cannot be demoted to the original inbound replica set. No additional space is required on the secondary group; delegated space is reduced by the size of the replica reserve.

Use this option if you are certain that the original volume has been destroyed. To replicate the resulting volume, you must configure it for replication, and the first replication of the volume will be a complete transfer of the volume data.

If you did not choose to retain the failback snapshot when configuring replication for a volume, you can permanently promote an inbound replica set in one step, as described below. If you chose to keep the failback snapshot, you must promote the inbound replica set to a recovery volume and then make the promotion permanent, as described in Temporarily Promoting an Inbound Replica Set to a Recovery Volume and Making an Inbound Replica Set Promotion Permanent.

To permanently promote an inbound replica set for a volume with the keep failback snapshot option disabled, follow these steps:

1. On the secondary group, click:
   
   Replication partners > partner_name > Inbound tab
   
   The partner_name is the name of the primary group.
2. In the Local Replicas panel of the Inbound Replication window, click Volume replicas. Select the replica set and click Promote to volume in the Activities panel.
3. In the Pause Inbound Replication Confirmation box (Figure 16: Pause Inbound Replication Confirmation ), confirm that you want to temporarily pause inbound replication from the partner. Replication will resume automatically (except for the affected volume) after the replica set is promoted.
4. In the Promote Replica Set – Volume Options dialog box (Figure 26: Promote Replica Set - Permanent - Volume Options ), select the volume options:
   • Choose whether to set the volume online.
   • Choose whether to retain the iSCSI target name of the original volume.
   • De-select Keep ability to demote to replica set.

Then, click Next.

5. In the Promote Replica Set - Permanent Volume Settings dialog box (Figure 27: Promote Replica Set - Permanent - Volume Settings ), specify a name (can be the same as the original volume name), optional description, and storage pool for the volume. Then, click Next.

6. In the Promote Replica Set - Permanent iSCSI Access dialog box (Figure 28: Promote Replica Set - Permanent - iSCSI Access ), specify access controls for the volume. Then, click Next.

7. In the Promote Replica Set - Permanent Summary dialog box (Figure 29: Promote Replica Set - Permanent - Summary ), ensure that the information is correct and click Finish. To make changes, click Back.

The inbound replica set will disappear and the new volume will appear in the list of volumes.
